Benchmark indices Sensex, Nifty close at record high after paring gains

Mumbai: Benchmark index Sensex closed at 31,028.21 on Friday after creating history by breaching the 31,000 mark. The Nifty also closed at a record high owing to sustained fund inflows and corporate earnings.

Setting a new record of 31,074.07 earlier today, the Sensex closed at 31,028.21, up 278.18 points, or 0.90 per cent after paring some gains. It surpassed its earlier record closing of 30,750.03 on Thursday

The broader Nifty also crossed the 9,600 mark for the first time to touch 9,604.90, before settling at a record high of 9,595.10

All the sectoral indices, led by capital goods, metal, auto and power, were trading in the positive zone with gains of up to 3.53 per cent.

Since the BJP government came to power in May 2014, the Sensex has risen nearly 26 per cent.

Market analysts said persistent inflow of foreign funds and sustained buying by retail investors, supported by a series of positive cues such as early onset of monsoon, upbeat quarterly earnings and finalisation of GST rates, fuelled the rally, the report said.

Brokers said the fall in global crude oil prices and firmness of rupee against dollar influenced the trading sentiment.
